Guthrie Theatre

Pictures from May 2005

Between South Second Street and West River Parkway, west of the Mill City Museum
Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States
Architect: Jean Nouvel
Projected Completion: 2006

The people of Minneapolis not only have one of the greatest contemporary art museums at the Walker Art Center (recently expanded by Herzog and de Meuron) but also have one of the great regional theatres in the country. The Guthrie Theatre is moving out of the shadows of the Walker (literally- it was located next door to the museum) to a brand new riverfront location. Perched atop the hill next to the old industrial mills, Jean Nouvel's new dark blue Guthrie conspicuously hangs over the West River Parkway yet somehow manages to look like it belongs.
